What are the most common gas line issues?
Gas line problems, solved
One of the most easily identified gas line issues is the smell of gas. These larger leaks have a very distinct odor. However, smaller leaks can go unnoticed for long periods of time which can cause headaches, nausea and respiratory issues, etc. If your water heater or your pool heater isn’t working properly a gas line issue could be to blame. Please note that whenever you smell gas, please call a plumber immediately and let the professionals handle the issue as quickly as possible.
How is a gas line or gas leak fixed?
How to fix a gas line
First, we remove the piping that goes to the meter. We then put a gauge on it and pump up the system. Next, we follow the system and spray down all the fittings and joints to find the leak. In some cases the leak is at the end of the system which allows just an end piece or a valve to be replaced. In other cases, the leak may be in the middle of the pipe which would require it to be cut out or a tract pipe has to be inserted. If this is the case, Centerpoint has already been called and they have removed the meter. We then get a permit from the city and meet with the inspector. Once the city inspector approves the work then Centerpoint brings the meter back out to the location and installs it.
What does it cost to fix a gas leak?
Gas leak prices
There are many variables that go into the cost of the repair of a gas leak. Starting at $300, the price is going to be dependent upon two factors. First, the location of the leak. If the leak is easily accessible and digging is not required this would keep the cost down. The second would be where the gas leak is physically located on the line. If the leak is at the end of the system this could keep your cost down. If it is in the middle and tract pipe has to be inserted the cost of the repair would go up.
How do I check for a gas leak in my house?
Do you smell gas?
When a homeowner smells gas your first instinct is to try and find the source of the leak. An easy way to pinpoint the leak is to take a spray bottle and fill it with soap and water. Go down the line of the system and spray the lines and the fittings. You will be looking for bubbles from the gas leaking out of the line. Once you find the bubbles, you have discovered the location of the leak.
What should you do first if you have a gas leak?
Take action immediately
Smell gas and you don’t know who to call? You can either call your home warranty company or you can call your preferred plumber to come out and fix it immediately. Remember your home warranty company is going to use their own plumbers for the job. Overall, gas leaks are minor repairs and are not usually covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy. A gas leak is not something that should be ignored, it should be taken care of immediately when first detected.
