If an open flame comes close to a gas leak, it is possible to ignite. However, gas is lighter than air and will rise quite quickly. If you use propane, open flames next to propane gas leaks is a very deadly combination – as it has the potential to cause an explosion. If you are considering safe options to check if you have a gas leak, simple add a small amount of dish soap to a spray bottle and place on the area suspected of leaking. If you notice bubbles forming, immediate call a plumbing professional to further assess the leak.
